Runnability and quality problems very often occur in coating machine processes, yet the real reasons cannot be found with traditional methods.
To help troubleshoot these problems, a new method has been developed.
The method is based on accurate angle measurement of the blade both in the cross direction and the maximum/minimum angle range of the blade. This method includes the use of a newly developed angle sensor which is capable of measuring true blade tip angles during a machine shutdown.
Having accurate blade angle measurements across in CD gives a good indication of how accurate all the coating head components are. When full angle CD profiles are measured covering the whole operation range of the blade angles, possible expected problem areas can be detected. Secondly, by summarizing the results together with coating problems, the possible causes can be pinpointed.
Benefits
The right blade angle will give
– a better 2sigma coat weight value
– a better PPS value
– a better gloss value
– better runnability
– no overflow on the blade
